Beakerhead | Sept 13-17
(Calgary) Today kicks off the first day of the five-day long Beakerhead festival, September 13 – 17, 2017.
The city wide spectacle consists of over 60 events centred around delightfully bizarre engineered installations and artworks. In 2016, 130,000 people took part, with 2017 shaping up to be the biggest year yet.
With both free public events, and ticketed events, events opened today at 10am with more than 20 free events and ends Sunday with an after party (11pm-2am) at The Palace Theatre with un-tastic DJ duo SkiiTour.
If you can only attend one event, we recommend Beakernight, held at Fort Calgary and the East Village River Walk this year. Admission to Beakernight is by donation, and a non-ticketed event.
The dark comes to life with multiple installations, experiences, and performances spread out across Fort Calgary and the River Walk. Warm up beside Serpent Mother's 20-foot tall towers of fire, grab a chemical cocktail at the Beakerbar. Bask in the glow of innumerable twinkling lights, discover a sea mammal of magnificent proportion, and join together around the Rings of Reconciliation.
This Calgary Life are also set to attend the Science of Cats and Dogs at Mount Royal University tomorrow night and Seven Wonderers at the Studio Bell, a Ted-Talk style evening with featured speakers who inspire, entertain, and provoke.
Other Beakerhead highlights include:
Serpent Mother: This is the largest fire-breathing installation at Beakerhead to date – stretching 168 feet long and with 40 pillars of fire – by the Flaming Lotus Girls.
Calgary Municipal Space Station: It was just a matter of time before public transit was extended to the solar system. A group of artists called Humble Wonder is turning the Calgary Tower into the world’s first public transitspace station. Yes, virtual reality is involved.
Impulse: A premiere in western Canada by Montreal artists, Creos; these 15 giant see-saws are equipped with sound and lights and will animate River Walk in East Village
Four to Six: Welcoming back four to six, attendees can enjoy three full blocks of open-air experimentation on Stephen Avenue walk.
Loop: This musical installation invites you to sit inside an illuminated cylinder two meters in diameter, where your motion will activate this retro-futuristic mechanism, causing beautiful imaged inspired by fairy tales to come to life.
